The mission of CDS is to promote and
facilitate the growth and development of Disability Studies at UMKC and in
the Midwest while supporting systems changes that benefit all persons with
disability and their families. The CDS is guided by the social model of
disability. The social model of disability acknowledges that disability
as a socially created condition, not merely an attribute of an individual,
and that disability is a form of institutional discrimination and social
exclusion, rather than a product of physical condition.
